Abstract
Introduction: Previous studies have demonstrated that serum uric acid (SUA) is an independent predictor of incident type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and have shown the positive association of hyperglycemia with increased serum uric acid. While some have reported lower serum uric acid levels in patients with severe hyperglycemia. The relationship between SUA and diabetes is controversial. Hence, present study was designed to establish the association of serum uric acid with different glycemic state.
Objectives
1. To evaluate serum uric acid levels in patients of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.
2. To correlate serum uric acid levels with glycemic parameters in patients of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.
Materials and Methods: 50 cases and 50 controls were included. Fasting blood sugar (FBS), HbA1c and SUA were measured. Based on FBS levels cases were divided into 4 groups i.e., Group I (126mg/dl to 175mg/dl), II (176mg/dl to 225mg/dl), III (226mg/dl to 275mg/dl) and IV (?276mg/dl) and based on HbA1c levels cases were divided into 3 groups i.e., Group A (6% to 7.9%), B (8% to 9.9%) and C (?10%). Data was statistically analyzed using SPSS–17.
Results: Based on FBS levels classification significant positive difference to serum uric acid was observed among Group I Vs II (p<0.05) & Group I Vs III (p<0.01), No significant difference among Group II Vs III (p>0.05) and significant negative difference among Group I Vs IV (p<0.0001), Group II Vs IV (P<0.0001) & Group III Vs IV (p<0.0001). Based on HbA1c levels classification significant positive difference to serum uric acid was observed among Group A Vs B (p<0.0001) and negative significant difference among Group A Vs C (p<0.01) & Group B Vs C (p<0.0001).
Conclusion: We found increase in serum uric acid in cases compared to controls. Serum uric acid initially increased with increase in FBS and HbA1c ranging from 126 mg/dl to 275 mg/dl and 6% to 9.9% respectively and thereafter decreased with further increase in FBS and HbA1c.
